In the Beginning, there was The Whole Earth Catalog.

And it was good.

Thus begat Shelter, and that too, was good.

Eventually, after some recreation, and most likely wine and cheese, and about 30 years, which must have seemed like an epoch to those involved, came Home Work, then Builders of the Pacific Coast, followed by Tiny Homes and in short order Tiny Homes on the Move, as well as many others.

Now, Lloyd has released his next book, this one titled Rolling Homes. As the name implies, it revolves around mobile accommodations of these sorts: housetrucks, buses, caravans, etc. Lloyd always manages to make his subject stand away from the wall with exemplary writing, sublime photography and innovative and pleasing layout.

(Yes, there is a book by the same name, I even review it here, it's worth a look for historical perspective, but available copies are few and far between.)

This book is sure to be a winner, and not just because it's on a subject so close to my heart. Have a look at some of the sample pages presented on the book's page at the Shelter website. More of Lloyd's books, as well as selections from other authors at Shelter Publications

Now, sharp readers of this blog will notice that I haven't actually included any actual "review" of the book. This is due partly to the fact that I have so far only lightly skimmed through it. Not because I'm not interested in the contents, but because I'm "saving" this book for some special occasions. You see, the last several of Lloyd's books that I have purchased were squirreled away in a similar fashion, and only brought out to read carefully when, for instance, spending a week at a friend's beach house, somewhere that I could really get relaxed and out of my daily routines, and savor slowly and carefully while the ocean either laps or rages at the sand (depending on the season) right before me.

Really, I'll fire up the scanner soon and get some sample images up here soon, I've looked through the book enough to identify which content I'd like to share with you.

Below are thumbnails of each of Shelter's building and homesteading books. Clicking the image will take you to the Shelter website with a description and purchase information:

(Among the books depicted here, I have an original copy of Shelters, Shacks and Shanties, which is a delight)
